Thirteen Ways of Seeing Nature in LA

To many people Los Angeles is a place of big city lights with little to no nature around but this an untrue assumption; nature is everywhere, depending on your point of view. In Jennifer Price’s article, “Thirteen Ways of Seeing Nature in LA”, she says, “It is sort of a Death Star to American nature lovers.” Price is using the example of the Death Star as a distraction tool to individuals who appreciate nature for all of it’s beauty. You can never please everyone because every single individual on the planet has their own personal opinion about everything. Some opinions may be very similar but none are exactly the same. This works with perception as well; the way people view things is completely up to them based on past experiences. For example, when Los Angeles is mentioned every one has their own view of what they first see. Los Angeles means something different to everyone.

In the Star Wars movies the death star is a moon sized space station that the government uses to strike fear into the people of all planets in the galaxy as the ultimate super weapon. Many nature lovers see Los Angeles as American’s Death Star. There are some part of Los Angeles that have awful natural appearances to the city such as some beach, the air quality, or the river made of concrete. But the assumption that Los Angeles has no nature to it is incorrect. I see the nature of Los Angeles as a metropolitan state with many people, cars, buildings, and roads. That is the nature of the city. It may not be natural nature like many people around the country see nature with forests, rivers, lakes, and wild animals, but that does not mean Los Angeles is killing nature. Los Angeles’s nature is just more modernized than what people around the country are used to.
